On August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina swept through three states along the northern shore of the Gulf of Mexico, causing more than 2,000 deaths and destroying more than 300,000 homes. With 80% of New Orleans flooded, the wake of evacuations gave rise to racial and social issues, followed by looting and violence. The whole world was shocked to see an "out-of-order" America.
Responding to the call Dharma Master Cheng Yen, Tzu Chi volunteers from the southern United States first joined the disaster relief efforts followed by volunteers from all over the globe. Rhythms Monthly immediately sent teams of journalists to the affected areas and spent the following year documenting the post-hurricane recovery. In the process, they witnessed the social restructuring in America as a result of the Katrina's catastrophic path. In over 80,000 words and 200 first-hand photos, Rhythms Monthly provides an in-depth look of the resurrection of the multi-faceted city of jazz- The Love Within Hurricane Katrina: A Tzu Chi Perspective.
二○○五年八月二十九日，卡崔娜颶風橫掃墨西哥灣區美國南方三州，兩千多人死亡，三十萬棟房舍遭到摧毀。爵士樂聖城紐奧良有百分之八十的區域浸泡水中，貧富差距與種族問題也隨著棄城與劫掠而搬上檯面。大眾媒體上，「失序的美國」震撼著世人。
「凝聚全球慈濟愛，合心力援紐奧良」。在證嚴法師的呼籲下，美南慈濟志工搶先投入救災，全球各地的大愛也隨之匯聚而來。《經典》雜誌除了在第一時間趕赴災區外，更以後續一年的時間關注風災後的復原與重建，八萬字深入報導，近兩百幀現場影像，見證了卡崔娜在美國所激發出的社會思索。期以《變調爵士城：紐奧良蒙難記實》一書，記錄這一座多元城市的苦難與再起。
